Past Master, Martyn Wheatley, and his wife Valerie organized another fun and fascinating history walk for SIM members.
His latest walk started at Paddington Station and followed the Regents Canal all the way to Camden Lock.
Along the way, Martyn brought to life the history of the canal and its operations, plus all the surrounding area, buildings, personalities, and key sites, around the canal.
Everything was included from Paddington Station, a certain famous bear, the inception of the London Underground, Nissan’s amazing Design Centre, Robert Browning, Little Venice, Thomas Hosmar Shepherd, Guy Gibson, Crocker’s Folly, a major electricity distribution system beneath our feet, Lords, Churchill’s gift of The London Mosque, RAK Recording Studios, plus of course Mickie Most, the hidden River Tyburn, Blow-Up-Bridge, London Zoo, bumblefoot, Cumberland Basin, how to get a horse out of a canal, Gilbey’s Gin, and so much more.
And we were very lucky with the weather. It had rained hard for days before, plus the days after the walk, but for the SIM crew it was sunny, warm, and dry all day. Just perfect.
Everyone had a fascinating and fun morning, which ended with lunch in Camden, at the many restaurants and food outlets by the famous market.
Do not miss Martyn’s next SIM history walk, Secret Kensington, which will be on Saturday 07 September 2024.
