As global leaders in the highly contested underwater domain, the Royal Navy Submarine Service operates from the Euro-Atlantic to the Indo-Pacific to deliver global security, stability, and prosperity.
This week, at Navy Command Headquarters in Portsmouth, I had the great pleasure and honour of signing an agreement, to establish The Centre for Underwater Acoustic Analysis (CUAA), with the indomitable Rear Admiral James Parkin CBE RN, Director Navy Develop. It aims to work with the Royal Navy to maximise its operational advantage. The agreement confirms the vital importance of a key aspect of the Integrated Review 2021, to place science and technology at the heart of the Royal Navy’s strategy.
I owe so much to so many extraordinary people across the Royal Navy for this privilege, some of whom have since retired, and many others promoted. To me, the CUAA’s devotional basis is to ensure that, by the application of enhanced scientific research, every Submarine that we send out, comes safely home, having performed its tasks more effectively. To that degree I honour serving and veteran members of the Senior Service, and the “intellectual gold dust”, in our scientists and leadership team alike, from my own company and our research Institute. I hope that this example of public service shows how UK industry and defence can work together, to fulfil what the First Sea Lord described so well in his recent Venice speech, as a “Whole of Nation” endeavour, to make for a better world.
