On Saturday 28 March 2026, Twenty-one SIM members, joined Martyn and Valerie Wheatley for their latest SIM history walk, covering the Waterloo and Lambeth area.
This chilly, but very sunny day out, began with details of Waterloo Station, and went on to include, the Windrush Pioneers, William Blake the artist, the St John’s Church art group, who have produced many vibrant mosaics of Blake’s work, Philip Astley, the founder of circus as we know it, The Old Vic, fantastic graffiti art under the arches, the Necropolis Railway, the film location of the classic film, Passport to Pimlico, Captain Bligh of The Bounty, the father and son plant hunters of the 17th century, the Tradescants, a very unreliable horse ferry, Lambeth Palace, the origins of Royal Doulton, the United Nations IMO on shipping, plus the very brave SOE agent, Violette Szabo, plus the brilliant Florence Nightingale, and much more.
It was a fascinating day that was enjoyed by all.
Lunch on board the floating pub, Tamesis Dock, was also a treat, and many tucked into fresh pizzas and local brews, while enjoying views across the Thames to Parliament and nearby.
Don’t miss Martyn’s next SIM walk, which will be on Saturday 03 October, when we will follow the hidden River Effra, and track its history, from Brixton, through Kennington, across Vauxhall, and into the Thames by the MI6 building.
