Admiral of the Port Challenge Race 11 June 2026

The Admiral of the Port Challenge Race is a historic 2-nautical-mile traditional rowing event on the River Thames. Organized by the Thames Traditional Rowing Association, the competition features traditional four-oared Watermen’s cutters and skerries representing City Livery Companies and other river organizations.  The course of this race is from HQS Wellington to the Westminster Boating Base, Pimlico, a distance of two nautical miles (although somewhat questioned by those rowing). Boats then continue upstream and disembark at Chelsea Harbour Pier.

Those representing the Company took to the water in the Gordon Hall Cutter, with the Livery Flag billowing from the stern the team set off at a cracking pace.  As the race came to its closing moments Gordon Hall was tied neck and neck for second place with Vittoria from the London Port Health Authority.  Alas Vittoria gained a surprising lead, and Gordon Hall was narrowly pipped to the post coming in third which is a fantastic achievement! taking immense endurance, grit, and hours of hard work.

The Master wishes congratulations to those that took part on a great result!

Full results and pictures from the event can be viewed below.

Colonel’s Review of Trooping the Colour Saturday 6th June 2026

On Saturday 6th June a group of members and guests were delighted to attend the Colonel’s Review of Trooping the Colour on Horse Guards Parade.  Although the weather was slightly wet (think downpour in places) it did nothing to dampen the spirt of those in attendance.  After the parade the group moved to the Royal Horse Guards hotel for a reception and a splendid lunch.

Manchester SIM Hub

Manchester SIM Hub meeting November 2025

Last Thursday, the Manchester SIM Hub met at its usual venue, The Wharf, for an evening of excellent conversation and discussion across a wide range of topics.

The meeting also marked a moment of transition. Freeman Sam White, who has coordinated the Hub and its events for the past two years, will be taking up a new position and relocating to Cambridge.Mason Adshead will be continuing the Hub’s activities in Manchester and plans to revitalise the group with a refreshed focus on local members. Please offer Mason your support as he steps into this role. He will be in touch shortly to confirm the date of the next meeting, and we look forward to seeing the Hub continue to grow and flourish under his guidance.

Liveryman Meng Wu QEPrize Ambassador at St James’s Palace

It was an honour for me to be invited this month, to St James’s Palace as a guest and a QEPrize Ambassador, to attend the ceremony and dinner for The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering 2024, and The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering 2025.

I was humbled, and excited, to talk with His Majesty The King, and HRH The Duke of Gloucester.

I proudly told them, that I am a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers and we talked about my PhD research being conducted at Orkney.

It was a wonderful occasion to celebrate the strength of engineering in the UK, plus the important achievements of engineers in this country.

QEPrize Ambassadors are early career engineers from all fields who volunteer for charitable and educational activities on behalf of The QEPrize Foundation.

Manchester SIM Hub Liverpool World Museums Visit

On Monday, 31st March, the Manchester SIM Hub visited the World Museum Liverpool for a guided tour led by three expert curators: Alan, Wendy, Emma and PhD student Sabrina. Their deep knowledge and enthusiasm brought the museum’s collections to life as we explored Liverpool’s rich heritage in scientific instrumentation, horology, and the astronomy. We even had the opportunity to review some of the artefacts up close during the afternoon session.

Thank you again to the museum team for a superb visit.

Many thanks Sam White
