STEMPOINT at SIM 2024

It was a delight to see so many young science, technology and engineering students sharing their work through the STEMPOINT poster session at the Hall. The range of assignments – supported by universities, research institutes and commercial businesses – was incredible and included gene mutation research, quantum entanglement, biometrics, machine learning, generative AI and many more subjects. I was privileged to be asked to present award certificates to the students who demonstrated great dedication to their projects. – Jim Webster, Master.

Manchester Hub meeting

The Manchester SIM Hub met at their usual pub, the Wharf in central Manchester, Thursday 3rd October. Five members attended with Hugh McCann welcomed to the group, able to join us for the first time. As has become customary for the Manchester SIM Hub, we enjoyed another evening filled with fantastic food and great conversation – this time with topics spanning careers, new business opportunities and world travel.
We will be meeting again on Tuesday November 26th 2024, so if you are local or happen to be in the Manchester area that evening, please do join us!

Welcome to Mark Wharrier who gained his Freedom of the City on 4 October. We look forward to admitting him as a Liveryman of the Company on 17 October 2024.

Molecular Clock

21st century measurement – DNA Dating

How molecular clocks are refining human evolution’s timeline -Analyzing DNA from present-day and ancient genomes provides a complementary approach for dating evolutionary events. Because certain genetic changes occur at a steady rate per generation, they provide an estimate of the time elapsed. These changes accrue like the ticks on a stopwatch, providing a “molecular clock.” Go here to read more from The Conversation.

Dr William Milligan & Professor Ahmed Kovacevic - Receiving Award

Cornish Award 2024

This years Cornish Award has gone to Professor Ahmed Kovacevic, FREng from City, University of London and Freeman Dr William Milligan from Howden Compressors in recognition of the success of the excellent cooperation across the teams that they lead over many years, which has resulted in significant advancement in the field through better simulation and measurement and its application to creating new and better compressor technology, resulting in significant benefits for the company and for UK industry. Manchester SIM Hub

The Manchester SIM Hub met at their usual meeting place the Wharf, in Manchester on August 1st. As usual, the meeting covered a diverse range of different topics from travel to quantum physics and potential local museum visits to they Olympics. We hope to organise a local visit in Autumn and will keep the livery updated.
