The Master and Pauline were delighted to represent our Company at the Buckingham Palace Garden Party earlier this week. The Livery movement generally was very well represented. During the afternoon they had the privilege of being presented to the Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Gloucester.
The Master was delighted to represent our Company at Evensong in St Paul’s on the 80th anniversary of VE Day as a guest of the City of London Corporation. He was accompanied by his mother who had served in the Land Army and had, the previous day, been interviewed about her experiences by the BBC. The service was extremely moving and included a Sermon by Music that was exceptionally poignant.
Last evening (9 December 2024) members attended the Carol Service at St Margaret Lothbury together with the Coleman Street and Broad Street Ward Clubs. The Chaplain, Jeremy Crossley led a heartwarming service supported by the wonderful choir. We then moved to our Hall to enjoy a Christmas party with some excellent food and wine , a draw for festive fizz presented by Santa and some great trad jazz played by the Hendo Washboard Kings. As you will see from the photos, some of our members were moved to demonstrate their bopping skills with increasing enthusiasm as the evening progressed!

Master
On 9 November 2024, SIM combined with five other organisations under the grouping Our National Quality Infrastructure to join the Lord Mayors Show. The float consisted of representatives from UKAS, WCSIM, BSI, NPL, CQI|IRCA and CTSI. The float (named after the original river borne Show) included the Master, Jim Webster; Liverymen: Simon Flower and Joan Hall plus Freemen Scott Greenwell, Meng Wu and Ed Talboys. Scott and Joan took it in turns to carry a large balloon with the SIM coat of arms. Apparently we nearly lost Scott in a gust of wind. After the Show participants and their families were invited back to SIM Hall (aka Glaziers Hall) for refreshments and a sit down.

The Master was privileged to represent the Company at the annual Garden of Remembrance service at St. Paul’s Cathedral where he laid a cross in honour of those who have died in the service of our country.
It was a delight to see so many young science, technology and engineering students sharing their work through the STEMPOINT poster session at the Hall. The range of assignments – supported by universities, research institutes and commercial businesses – was incredible and included gene mutation research, quantum entanglement, biometrics, machine learning, generative AI and many more subjects. I was privileged to be asked to present award certificates to the students who demonstrated great dedication to their projects. – Jim Webster, Master.
As Master of the Water Conservators I had the great pleasure to be invited to the Court Dinner of the Scientific Instrument Makers along with the Master Farmer and the Master Mariner (Master Water Conservator, Scientific Instrument Maker and Mariner above). I was warmly welcomed by members of the Company and we had fascinating discussions on the monitoring of water quality in rivers and the discharges from sewage works, farming and industry. We also discussed the management of data and communications with the public.

The Deputy Master, Professor Philip Thomas, was made an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Measurement and Control at a ceremony held in at Prince Philip House, London on 26 October. Honorary Fellowship is given in recognition of distinguished, and normally long, service to the Institute and/or measurement and control.
Mr Aubrey Dunford newly installed Master, assisted by the new Senior Warden Mr Jim Webster and the new Junior Warden Mrs Jane Fishwick, hosted the Admission Court Dinner of the Scientific Instrument Makers’ Company held in Scientific Instrument Makers’ Hall on 19 October 2023.
The Master Prof. Philip Thomas gave a lecture to Aldermanic Sherriff Michael Mainelli’s FS, Financial Services club.
