Held in the Rose and Crown, North Parade Oxford. We were six members and two guests, Anna and Tom Davies, Roger Sutton, Simon Flowers, Tim Denison and myself and Beverley Sutton and Chris Caunt were guests.

How molecular clocks are refining human evolution’s timeline -Analyzing DNA from present-day and ancient genomes provides a complementary approach for dating evolutionary events. Because certain genetic changes occur at a steady rate per generation, they provide an estimate of the time elapsed. These changes accrue like the ticks on a stopwatch, providing a “molecular clock.” Go here to read more from The Conversation.
This years Cornish Award has gone to Professor Ahmed Kovacevic, FREng from City, University of London and Freeman Dr William Milligan from Howden Compressors in recognition of the success of the excellent cooperation across the teams that they lead over many years, which has resulted in significant advancement in the field through better simulation and measurement and its application to creating new and better compressor technology, resulting in significant benefits for the company and for UK industry. The Manchester SIM Hub met at their usual meeting place the Wharf, in Manchester on August 1st. As usual, the meeting covered a diverse range of different topics from travel to quantum physics and potential local museum visits to they Olympics. We hope to organise a local visit in Autumn and will keep the livery updated.

Maria Watkins was a very active Liveryman in the 1980-90’s and a keen supporter of Apprentices. She died in 2010 and you might like to read the following written about her in 2019 under the heading Magnificent Women (in Engineering). She also features on Wikipedia as herself and on the page for History of Women in Engineering.

The Manchester SIM hub met for their regular meeting at the Wharf Pub in Manchester on June 17th. Numbers were a little low due to holidays and unforeseen work commitments. However, as always, an array of interesting topics were discussed, spanning cybersecurity to space exploration. We are looking forward to meeting again on Thursday August 1st.
